Saying it with Flowers

Rosie Nixon produces beautiful floral studies with feminine sensuality. With a background in horticulture, she has a much deeper understanding of her subject matter and her appreciation of the beauty in each season.

In many ways, Rosie is an undiscovered talent. I look at a lot of photography and was aware of floral studies by industry giants – such as Nick Knight and Robert Mapplethorpe – so when I stumbled across Rosie’s work I was very excited by it.

Observe, Notice and Discover

Saying it with Flowers is a collection of dreamy and sensual fine art images from the floral studies I take in my garden. Flowers have so much more going on than first meets the eye. Furthermore, I know my subjects so well.

As an artist, I use my camera to communicate and to intrigue, as I observe, notice, and discover. Because of this, I call it the Art of Seeing.

I grow Images!

The majority of flower images have been grown and nurtured in my own garden – some from seed. Consequently, I spend many hours working with light while observing their complexities and subtleties.

Sometimes a photograph will bring to our attention a flower we’ve seen so many times before but we’ve just never noticed its intrinsic beauty. Many have expressive rhythmic lines, intricate forms or even the fluid grace of a ballerina.

As a result, my floral studies give a fresh new vision – a sense of discovery and admiration.

Saying it with Flowers Opening Night

On Thursday 1st February I had a 3 hour private viewing evening at the gallery. It was lovely to have my images take over all the gallery wall space. Indeed, it actually felt like I was back in my own garden surrounded by my favourite flowers. Not to mention that I had winter, spring, summer, and autumn all on display at once!

Rosie is represented by Gallery Close in Edinburgh. It’s probably the only independent photographic gallery in Scotland.

Viewing the images brought back so many memories. Some of those memories were fun and whimsical moments and I enjoyed sharing those stories with our guests.

To conclude, if you’re not able to attend you can still purchase online. Just contact Chris Close with your requests for limited edition signed prints.

Finally, I’d just like to say thank you to John from Black Dog Signs Ltd for his great customer service in December. I needed a heavy-duty long reach embossing press for the exhibition and so I went to google search in my quest. He replied so promptly to my initial inquiry and couldn’t have been more helpful. I commissioned a design with Black Dog Signs and within a week I had my embosser. Their customer service was excellent and the embosser is great!
